Why You Should Always Have a Little Water In Your RV’s Tank

Here’s a good question I’m not sure many RVers have thought about: Why is it a good idea to always have a little water in your RV’s fresh water tank at all times?

Now if your headed off on a boondocking trip in the middle of nowhere, then fill her up because you are going to need all of the water you can get. This is pretty obvious. Being caught without water can prove to be a huge mistake. I really don’t expect any experienced RVer to attempt a boondocking trip without having their water tank completely filled.

Now, if you are planning on jumping from one campground to another and are certain that you are going to have hookups, then it can be very tempting to not fill your water tank and have no water at all. If you think about it, it seems to makes sense. I mean, you can remove a lot of extra weight from your toy hauler or RV and this can translate into better mileage and a few more dollars saved at the pump.

However, just because you are going to a site that has hookups doesn’t necessarily mean you are going to have water. I know this, because I’ve experienced it first hand. We planned on spending just a weekend at a park that we frequent fairly consistently and absolutely love the owners and the facility. 8 hours into our 48 hour stay there was a significant emergency and the entire water supply in the park had been shut off. “Oh, no!” I thought. We were actually attending a wedding nearby and my wife and I needed to shower and get ready. Not to mention the pile of dishes we had to clean from the dinner we had when we arrived.

I learned right then and there that we will always carry water with us in our fresh water tank. It might take some time to fill and it might add a little more weight to the RV, but I’d rather that than encounter an emergency of some sort like we did that weekend. I will never again go to a formal event smelling like a mixture of sweat, barbecue smoke and general odor. Cologne can only cover up so much before it gets other wedding guests questioning either your hygiene or your apparent loss of your sense of smell.

It’s a no-brainer folks…just keep your RV fresh water tank filled when you go on a trip because you never know when you may need an alternative fresh water source.
